Not much has gone right for the Detroit Tigers during their 30-42 season. But after seeing Tarik Skubal make his return from injury, the Tigers are now expected to welcome another pitcher back into their rotation.
Justin Verlander is slated to come off of the injured list and start on Sunday, via Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. The Tigers will be facing the Chicago White Sox at home.
Verlander has been on the injured list since early April with a hip injury. He has been working his way back through numerous rehab assignment starts. Now, the veteran is feeling healthy enough to work from the major league mound again.
The Tigers will still be cautious when it comes to Verlander. He is 43-years-old and in his 21st MLB season. While Detroit may be struggling, the last thing they want is for the right-hander to suffer a setback.
Verlander managed to make just one start in 2026 before suffering his injury, allowing five earned runs over 3.2 innings in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Still, the Tigers are well aware he has much more to offer. Over those 21 seasons, Verlander has posted a 3.33 ERA and a 3,554/1,006 K/BB ratio. He is a former MVP, three-time Cy Young winner, nine-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner.
Despite all those accolades, Verlander won’t be able to dig the Tigers out of their hole alone. But he does at least give Detroit a reliable option in their rotation again. His 2026 journey will now restart on Sunday against the White Sox.
