ESPN NBA reporter Brian Windhorst joined ESPN Radio Cleveland to discuss the future of Donovan Mitchell with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Mitchell and the Cavaliers had a season that exceeded expectations, making it to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. However, the team was swept by the eventual NBA champion, New York Knicks, and several questions remained about the future of Cleveland and their all-star guard.
"I think the Cavs and Donovan are in a very good place and I think everybody should be prepared the eventuality that he does not extend," – @WindhorstESPN explains why it makes more sense for Donovan Mitchell to sign a Cavs extension NEXT summer. pic.twitter.com/IEd9DaVE50

Windhorst broke it down, explaining the realities of Mitchell’s upcoming contract extension and the leverage that he enjoys.
“I think the Cavs and Donovan are in a very good place. And I think everybody should be prepared for the eventuality that he does not extend. He is in maximum control, maximum benefit, maximum choice, maximum leverage situation. Okay? He has one year left on his contract, and next year can sign with all of those goodies that come along with a brand-new contract with his- as a 10-year veteran. And if something goes wrong in this year, he has a player option that can protect him for the year after.
Windhorst then details a situation where Mitchell could sign and also pours cold water on the lack of an extension means that he won’t re-sign with the team.
Windhorst added, “So that is where the Cavs are at. The only incentive that he has to sign right now is to do the Cavs a favor. If Donovan does not extend, it doesn’t mean that he’s leaving. It doesn’t mean that he’s unhappy. It doesn’t mean that the Cavs should lose sleep. It does mean he’s maximizing his situation.”
