Tempo’s Sandy Brondello gets honest on Brittney Sykes’ injury vs. Fever

The Toronto Tempo absorbed their third straight defeat after getting blown out by the Indiana Fever, 113-91, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Tuesday.

The Tempo dropped to 7-8, while the Fever won their fourth straight outing and improved to 9-5.

The loss could be extra costly for Toronto after Brittney Sykes suffered a foot injury. She left the game in the third quarter and did not return, finishing with 11 points, two rebounds, and three assists.

ESPN’s Kareem Copeland said Tempo coach Sandy Brondello had no additional details on the status of the 32-year-old guard.

“No update on Sykes from Brondello. Said she’ll be evaluated, but hopes it’s not too serious,” wrote Copeland on X.

“I just saw her in the hallway on a scooter with ice on her foot. Seemed to be in good spirits.”

In a separate report from Copeland, Brondello expressed concern about possibly missing Sykes, a four-time All-Defensive Team member.

“Obviously, she’s been playing so well for us and doing so much for us at both ends of the floor. So when you lose one of your best players, it’s tough,” said Brondello.

“(If) we couldn’t find ways that could fill Slim’s shoes, that’s going to be really hard.”

The 32-year-old Sykes entered the game against the Fever as the league’s third-leading scorer at 20.7 points. As Copeland noted, she and Marina Marbey are the second-highest scoring duo in the WNBA behind Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, 38.6 points to 40.6 points.

Marbey led the Tempo against the Fever with 18 points, seven assists, and two steals.

They will try to snap their losing skid on Friday against the Connecticut Sun.
