The Philadelphia Phillies showed more lineup creativity Tuesday night, and Kyle Schwarber’s first-base start became a notable wrinkle in their 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins.
Schwarber started at first base at Citizens Bank Park, giving manager Don Mattingly another way to balance the lineup. The move helped keep Bryce Harper at designated hitter while preserving Philadelphia’s flexibility against Miami.
The defensive assignment carried some rarity. Schwarber had played first base only nine previous times in his MLB career, all during his 2021 stint with the Boston Red Sox.
SPORTSRADIO 94WIP shared the reaction from the two-time National League home run champion on X, formerly Twitter, crediting the network’s Dave Uram for capturing the video after Schwarber discussed his comfort level at first base following Tuesday’s win.
“Phillies’ slugger Kyle Schwarber said he ‘felt good’ playing first base tonight. Schwarber hit his 25th HR of the season in an 8-2 win.”

The night also included plenty of offense beyond Schwarber. Philadelphia scored seven runs across the first two innings, putting Miami on its heels early and giving the Phillies control before the game settled in.
Alec Bohm launched a 447-foot three-run homer, while Brandon Marsh added a two-run shot. Schwarber later hit his 25th home run, adding another powerful swing to a season already defined by loud contact and middle-of-the-order damage.
For the Phillies, the larger takeaway involved roster math. If Schwarber can handle occasional first-base duty, Mattingly gains another path to keep his most dangerous bats active without sacrificing too much lineup balance.
That matters in a tightly contested National League East race. Philadelphia improved to 40-33 and remained second in the division behind the Atlanta Braves after another convincing victory over Miami.
It also gave the club another practical option if matchups, rest days, or roster availability force more movement later in the season, especially during a tight division race.
Schwarber will always carry the most value with his power. Still, Tuesday showed he can help the Phillies in more than one way when the lineup requires creativity.
