Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James is currently enjoying the summer in Europe, reminiscing with his former teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers about their historic title in 2016.
But while James is sipping expensive wine, eating haute cuisine, and playing golf, the Golden State Warriors are probably agonizing over the perfect offer for the four-time MVP in free agency.
Over the past few weeks, the buzz surrounding the possibility of the Warriors acquiring James in the offseason has gotten louder. But according to a report from ESPN’s Anthony Slater, it could fizzle out in the coming days.
“Openness does not equal anticipation. All the intel that Warriors decision-makers have gathered continues to point toward James’ return to the Lakers, team sources said, and they are currently plotting their summer under that premise,” wrote Slater.
“The Warriors’ pitch, if the door cracks open, would be simple. They can clear room for the full $15.1 million nontaxpayer midlevel, a team-friendly, low-risk bargain with on-court and off-court financial upside.”
Slater noted that everything could go into overdrive if the front office asks Warriors guard Stephen Curry to recruit James. Curry and James have formed a tight friendship over the years and have publicly expressed their fondness for playing with each other in the All-Star Game and on Team USA.
“But they haven’t knocked on that door because they’ve been given any indication it can be unlocked,” added Slater.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst stated that the 41-year-old James is already discussing a possible extension with the Lakers, whom he led to their 17th title in 2020.
Many have also speculated that James would want to re-sign with the Purple and Gold to continue playing with his son, Bronny James, who is under contract until 2028.
Last season, the four-time champion averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals.
Aside from James, other players being linked to the Warriors are Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard, New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III, and Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr.
