The Atlanta Hawks will have some ways this offseason to build on their run from this past season, whether that’s in the draft or in free agency. One of the reasons for their run was CJ McCollum, who came in and was not only a veteran the team needed, but the scorer they could rely on.
McCollum will be a free agent, but the Hawks believe that he will return to the team, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer. Outside of McCollum, the Hawks are hoping to address some of their ball-handling needs in the draft as well.
“The Hawks certainly could stand to benefit from selecting a guard. While league sources maintain that Atlanta remains hopeful about its chances of re-signing veteran CJ McCollum in free agency after his standout postseason, sources say that the Hawks are interested in coming away with another downhill ballhandler to complement Jalen Johnson over a longer term,” Fischer wrote.
The Hawks have been rumored to have interest in some of the guards projected to go in the lottery, with Keaton Wagler and Mikel Brown Jr. being their favorites, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.
“Both Wagler and Brown are two guards the Hawks love, sources said,” Siegel wrote. “Aday Mara is another player sources say the Hawks are high on, yet conversations with league personnel continue to point in the direction of Atlanta favoring a guard in this spot to secure their backcourt long-term rather than target Mara.”
If the Hawks could get a younger option at the guard position to pair alongside Johnson for the future, that would be key for their team building.
Another area the Hawks are looking to build depth is the center position, as Onyeka Okongwu was one of their lone options last season due to injuries to several backups throughout the year.
