It has not been the best season for the Minnesota Twins. They are currently in third in the AL Central and outside of a wild card spot. This could lead to the team making a trade to sell off a quality asset. The best trade asset the Twins have is MVP candidate Byron Buxton.
While Buxton would be highly sought after, he is likely not going to be traded, according to Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN.
“All of this is moot, and Buxton will drop off the list, if he indicates he will use his no-trade protection to reject any potential deal. Buxton’s loyalty to Minnesota is admirable, but at 32, he also wants to win, and the Twins aren’t doing that this year. Barring a spending spree over the winter, that might not happen next year, either,” McDaniel and Passan wrote.
Buxton signed a seven-year deal to avoid arbitration ahead of the 2022 season. He has been with the franchise since breaking into the majors in the 2015 season. In that time, he has been to the playoffs just four times and won just one playoff series. Still, he remains committed to the Twins and would have to waive his no-trade clause if the Twins were to move him. That does not seem likely. If he does waive the no-trade clause, he will be a hot commodity.
“Minnesota is positioned to have another active deadline and go almost full rebuild, and if anything will change Buxton’s mind, it’s the Twins’ timeline. Should that happen, his chances of moving will be more like Skubal’s; and between Buxton’s multiple years of control and a reasonable contract, he’ll fetch a monster return,” McDaniel and Passan continued.
The team will have time before the trade deadline to decide if the season can be salvaged. The Twins are 35-40 on the season, and finish their three-game series with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, looking for the sweep.
