The WNBA has never been more popular. Earlier this year, the league and the WNBPA agreed to a transformative new CBA that has players paid more than ever before. The W made an announcement on Wednesday that shows the league is eager to expand its footprint in future seasons.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert declared that, starting in the 2027 season, each team will play 50 regular-season games, per The Athletic’s Annie Costabile. It is an increase from the league’s 44-game schedule.
“Demand for the WNBA has never been greater, and expanding to a 50-game regular season reflects the extraordinary momentum we are seeing across the league,” Engelbert said in a statement. “This move reflects our commitment to growing the game and creating more opportunities for fans to watch the best players in the world and experience the extraordinary talent and competition that define the WNBA.”
According to the terms of the new CBA, the WNBA schedule can increase to a maximum of 50 games in 2027 and 2028. That figure jumps to 52 games from 2029-32.
