Trade season is upon us in MLB. Of course, Tarik Skubal is the hottest name on the market. The Detroit Tigers ace is the best pitcher in baseball, yet his Tigers have struggled this year. So, considering the pitcher will become a free agent at season’s end, Skubal has been surrounded by trade rumors, especially since returning from midseason bone chip surgery.
ESPN not only pins Skubal as the top trade candidate, but they give it an 85% chance that he will be moved this year. Furthermore, six teams were chosen as trade fits, with those teams being the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Tampa Bay Rays.
In recent years, the Dodgers have always been in on the biggest and best available players in the league. Their roster is already stacked, but they surely won’t slow down when it comes to adding the best players in the world. Los Angeles is the back-to-back World Series champions, yet they still have disposable talent in a solid farm system. They currently have the best record in baseball with 47 wins. The Braves just trail them at 46-25. The team’s bounce-back season has been admirable, and a star pitcher could help ensure they don’t fall back to their ways of last season.
The Blue Jays made it all the way to the World Series last year, largely because of the aggressive moves they’ve made in recent years. They signed Dylan Cease to a massive deal after falling short in the Fall Classic, and the addition of Skubal would give them arguably the best one-two punch in baseball. The Brewers aren’t typically the most aggressive trade deadline buyers, but they should be this year, considering the on-field success they’ve had. Skubal would pair with Jacob Misiorowski, a breakout player this season who has a triple-digit fastball.
The Yankees and Rays are competing for the American League East title, too, and if either team landed Skubal, he’d likely provide the boost needed to win the division. Skubal has impressed since returning from injury quicker than anybody could have guessed. His dominant stuff is still present, and any team would love to have him, even if he is just a rental.
