Oilers rumors: The 2 ‘buyout proof’ Edmonton players, per insider

The Edmonton Oilers lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Anaheim Ducks. This led to changes in the organization, and the Oilers could potentially be hiring Mike Babcock.

While the Oilers try to figure out their coaching situation, they also need to figure out the future of their players. That could include buying out some contracts, but two contracts will not be bought out, according to Frank Seravalli of Hockey247.

Seravalli started his list of “buyout proof,” contacts with Darnell Nurse. Nurse has recently requested a trade, but even if a trade cannot be found, his contract will not be a buyout. While Nurse has a no-movement clause on the contract, that just protects him from being traded, waived, or sent to the minors. The contract can still be bought out.

Still, with the signing bonus of Nurse being spread over the next four years, the savings will make it so it would not be wise to buy out the contract. The Oilers would still have a $7.717 million cap hit this upcoming season, which does save just over $1.5 million. Still, they would save just $733 thousand for the next three seasons, and then have four seasons of dead cap space after that.

The other person mentioned by Seravalli was netminder Tristan Jarry. Buying out the contract this year would have $.67 million this year, and $1.167 million the next, but cost nearly half a million in dead cap space in 2028-29 and 2029-30.

Neither contract saves enough, as compared to the dead cap space in the future, and also not enough to make it worth it in the present.
