Where will Giannis Antetokounmpo end up this offseason? That’s the burning question that NBA fans are thinking about this offseason. After all the ruckus about the Milwaukee Bucks potentially trading him mid-season, many are expecting the team to finally pull the trigger midseason. Two teams have emerged as the top contenders to get the former MVP: the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat.
One of Giannis’ former coaches chimed in on the discussion about where the star wants to be traded. According to former NBA champion coach Doc Rivers, he thinks that there’s some good logic about why Giannis might pick the Heat, even though the price to get him might be far too steep.
“And you would’ve traded your closer because Tyler Herro is a closer,” Rivers said on Bill Simmons’ podcast. “Say what you want about him, but he’s a straight up closer. My guess is, that’s where he’s trusting their front office that they have the ability to add more pieces.”
One of the pitfalls of trading for a big star in the NBA is that you often have to trade one or more of your better players. Teams rarely trade for a star without losing one of their key players in return. That’s especially true for a team like that Heat, who doesn’t have a strong treasure trove of assets to trade for Antetokounmpo.
Because of that, the Heat are likely to lose one of Bam Adebayo and Herro, if not both. That would be a bit disastrous for the team’s chances of competing for an NBA title. Still, if Giannis believes that the front office can build a competent NBA team around him, Miami isn’t a bad coach. Erik Spoelstra is one of the best coaches of all-time, and he’s been able to squeeze water out of stone multiple times.
This saga is far from over. As the offseason continues, more and more teams will join the Giannis sweepstakes. More rumors will start going around the NBA fanbase. Where will the star eventually end up?
