The Golden State Warriors entered contract negotiations with Steve Kerr expecting discussions about maximizing the franchise’s remaining championship window. Instead, the veteran coach surprised members of the organization by advocating for a more measured long-term approach.
According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Kerr’s stance during negotiations that ultimately resulted in his two-year, $35 million extension differed from what some within the front office anticipated.
“During the three weeks of bigger picture conversation that ultimately led Steve Kerr to return as coach of the Golden State Warriors, sources in the front office expressed slight surprise about Kerr’s steadfast agreement that long-term organizational prudence is needed despite what sets up as an urgent final chapter,” Slater reported.
The report noted that Kerr aligned with the idea that Golden State should avoid sacrificing future assets for short-term upgrades, even as the franchise navigates the later stages of the eras of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
“Don’t mortgage the future for the present. Don’t throw around first-round picks for marginal upgrades,” Slater wrote.
One high-ranking team source echoed that sentiment.
“It’s what should’ve been done four years ago,” the source said. “But not now.”
The shift marks a notable change from previous seasons. As recently as the February trade deadline, the Warriors reportedly engaged in aggressive discussions with the Milwaukee Bucks regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo and expressed a willingness to part with significant draft capital. According to Slater, Golden State has taken a much more cautious approach during offseason conversations.
Warriors, Steve Kerr united on franchise direction

The reporting aligns with details previously shared by Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, who reported that Kerr, owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. spent weeks discussing philosophical changes, roster construction and the franchise’s long-term vision before finalizing a new contract. Siegel reported that all sides wanted to ensure they shared the same direction before moving forward.
Kerr acknowledged that reality during his introductory news conference after agreeing to return.
“We had to come to a much more reality-based shared vision on what success looks like for us,” Kerr said. “What are we trying to accomplish? Because for the first time since our injury-plagued year [in 2019-20], we aren’t sitting here saying, ‘Hey, we can win a championship.’”
The comments reflect a level of honesty that has become increasingly common around the organization following a 37-45 season and Play-In Tournament exit.
Rather than pushing for an all-in approach, Kerr’s position suggests the Warriors are focused on balancing competitiveness with sustainability. While Curry remains one of the NBA’s biggest stars, the organization appears determined to avoid compromising its future for moves that may not significantly alter its championship outlook.
That shared vision ultimately became a key factor in Kerr’s decision to return and the Warriors’ decision to keep one of the most successful coaches in franchise history in place through the 2027-28 season.
