The Boston Celtics are currently mired in trade rumors surrounding Jaylen Brown as they work through the 2026 offseason. Some have speculated that the Celtics might look to swing a trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo on the heels of their first round playoff collapse against the Philadelphia 76ers in which they blew a 3-1 lead.
Jayson Tatum missed Game 7 of that series due to injury, and recently, sports media personality Colin Cowherd of FS1 made a hot take about the superstar, who returned from an Achilles injury this season.
“Tatum’s just really talented. There are times he doesn’t lead, he doesn’t initiate, and way too often he doesn’t close!” said Cowherd, per Herd w/Colin Cowherd on X, formerly Twitter, agreeing with The Ringer’s recent controversial ranking of Tatum as the 13th best player in the league.
Tatum has come under fire at times for being passive in crunch time throughout his career, although he has had some of his biggest games in the most intense moments, including dropping 45 against the Milwaukee Bucks on the road back in 2022, and pouring 51 on the 76ers in a Game 7 the following year.
When healthy, Tatum is one of the most complete players in the league, and by the end of last season, he was starting to look more like the peak version of himself on the heels of his Achilles tear. Still, clearly not everyone views him as the same dominant force he once was.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if Brad Stevens will do something drastic this offseason in order to preserve the Celtics’ title window while other teams, including the recently crowned NBA champion New York Knicks, threaten to take full control of the Eastern Conference’s future.
