As the baseball world continues to conjure up potential trade offers surrounding Miami Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara, there is no denying that conversations will continue ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Speaking on “Foul Territory,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan would be asked about the possibility of Miami trading Alcanatra, and answers how the National League standings could dictate what the team will do.
“I think this with the Marlins is a perfect example of the standings dictating things, and the Marlins are a very patient organization and I think they understand that in the landscape of the National League it’s a little bit different than the American League, you’ve got the Dodgers, you’ve got the Braves, you’ve got the Phillies playing like a team that looks like it could be a World Series contender, and among all of those, what you have are great pitching staffs,” Passan said.

So far this season with the Marlins, the former NL Cy Young winner is recording a 4.18 ERA to go along with 77 strikeouts and a 7-4 record in 16 games. Passan would say that with how the future is bright for Miami and with Alcantara’s trade stock dropping, this season could be the time for a trade.
“Sandy Alcantara, after this year, has a 21, I think, million dollar option for next season, but he’s beginning to lose some of that trade value. Previously, it was down because of performance; now it’s just a question of: How much are we actually going to be getting out of this guy with only a year and a half control?”
At any rate, it remains to be seen if the Marlins trade Alcantara and which teams pursue the 30-year-old, as the team is 37-38, which puts them fourth in the NL East.
