Grammy-nominated singer Alicia Keys is set to perform her hit song at the New York Knicks Championship Parade Ceremony. Knicks owner James Dolan announced that Keys will perform her song “Empire State of Mind” during the victory parade. The song, performed alongside Jay Z, came out in 2009 and became synonymous with modern-day New York. The song spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009.
In a 2017 Billboard.com interview, Keys spoke about the inception of the song.
“When we first finished ‘Empire,’ we all wondered if it would be too ‘New York.’ We wondered if everyone would be able to understand it. Little did we know EVERYONE would understand it because it’s not just about New York, it’s about the HOPE that New York represents; the possibility. The chance to follow your dreams no matter who you are or where you come from.”
She added, “When people sing the lyrics to that chorus they are reminded to dream as big as they possibly can! That’s what ‘Empire’ is about! It gives me chills! In these crazy times, I hope we stay a city (and a country) where that remains true.”
The Knicks championship run certainly showcased hope and possibility in the Big Apple. The team won their first championship in 53 years, a dominant 4-1 series victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Their victory included a 29-point comeback that set the record for the largest in NBA Finals history. The Knicks now get to celebrate the spoils of their championship victory, including hearing the anthems of the city during the parade.
