2 reasons Suns’ Devin Booker is changing jersey to No. 15

With the Phoenix Suns in the midst of the offseason, the team is looking to make some noise next season, once again led by star guard Devin Booker. As it remains to be seen if the Suns go out and sign any players this offseason, there will be a big change for Booker when it comes to his jersey number.

Every Phoenix and basketball fan has been used to seeing the No. 1 being sported by Booker, but after 11 seasons, he will change to the No. 15, first reported by Etienne Catalan. NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN would note that the change from No. 1 to No. 15 is because that is his number for the USA basketball, and it was the college number of his father, Melvin.

“Devin Booker could be changing his number from No. 1 to No. 15. Still need to be confirmed by the team. He wore 15 during the last Olympics,” Catalan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker is changing his jersey from No. 1 to No. 15, honoring his USA Basketball uniform and the college number of his father, Melvin, per ESPN sources,” Charania wrote on X.

A fresh start for Suns’ Devin Booker with the number change

As mentioned, Booker has been a leading force for the Suns ever since he was drafted with the 13th overall pick by Phoenix in the 2015 NBA Draft, coming out of the University of Kentucky. Last season, Booker averaged 26.1 points, six assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc.

A fresh start with the number change for Booker could be needed, especially with the connection to the Team USA squad and his father. Booker looks to help Phoenix improve after finishing with a 45-37 record, which put them eighth in the Western Conference, having made it through the play-in tournament, but being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the playoffs.
