Karl-Anthony Towns throws shade at Nets during Seth Meyers interview

Karl-Anthony Towns couldn’t resist taking a subtle shot at the Nets while discussing the Knicks’ championship run in an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Towns was on the show to celebrate the Knicks’ huge championship victory in the 2026 NBA Finals over the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks’ championship victory is the franchise’s first since 1973.

During the interview, Towns joked that even Brooklyn had rallied behind New York despite being home to a rival NBA franchise.

“It was so amazing to see our team bring together New York. Like, I’ve never seen all five boroughs get together. Hell, I saw Brooklyn celebrating for the Knicks, and they have a whole team [the Nets].”

The Knicks are widely regarded as New York’s team despite significant struggles over the past two decades leading into the historic finals victory. During that time, the Nets, who were originally in New Jersey, moved to Brooklyn in 2012. The team has experienced success in the past 26 years, including two back-to-back Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003. The Nets in both New Jersey and Brooklyn also boasted several star players, including Jason Kidd, Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett, as well as the superstar trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden. However, the team was still unable to win a championship.

But the Knicks’ acquisition of Jalen Brunson, as well as Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges, ultimately turned the team into a championship contender and eventual champion. Now the Knicks look to rebuild and find themselves in the championship conversation amongst their rival New York organization.
