The Los Angeles Dodgers are taking on the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday with Shohei Ohtani starting on the mound despite dealing with inflammation in his left knee. After four strong innings from the two-way phenom, the fifth inning got away from him, as Ohtani had the worst inning of the 2026 season.
Ohtani got rocked in the fifth inning of the contest, allowing four earned runs during that frame, according to Katie Woo of The Athletic. That is officially a season-high for earned runs in a single game for the 31-year-old right-hander.
“The Tampa Bay Rays had a very Tampa Bay Rays inning, spraying the ball all over the field as they continue to tack on runs against Ohtani,” reported Woo. “It’s a four-run fifth and a season-high in earned runs for Shohei, and things are stirring in the Dodgers bullpen.”
To put things into perspective, Dodgers Insider revealed that the four earned runs on Ohtani in the fifth inning against the Rays are nearly equal to the five earned runs he allowed in just the first 10 starts of the 2026 campaign. It’s a great example proving just how hard the Rays hit the nine-year veteran on Wednesday.
“The Rays tag Shohei Ohtani for four runs in the fifth. He allowed five earned runs in his first 10 starts this season,” said Dodgers Insider.
Ohtani’s last two outings on the mound have been less than spectacular. His last start came in the 9-8 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 10. In that contest, the four-time MVP allowed three earned runs before being pulled from the sixth inning. That’s now seven earned runs allowed in his last two starts.
