The 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers championship team is enjoying their 10-year reunion by playing golf on Wednesday morning. Richard Jefferson showcased himself alongside LeBron James, J.R. Smith, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, and Tristan Frye on his ex-account with the caption, “Let’s see who’s actually the best golfer.”
Many assumed it was new North Carolina A&T alumnus J.R. Smith, who played collegiate golf during his recent tenure with the Aggies. But Richard Jefferson hilariously poured cold water on the claim. Jefferson posted a video of JR Smith fishing the golf ball out of a river and captioned the post, “To those of you that said swish.”

J.R. Smith and his HBCU story became prolific during his tenure at North Carolina A&T. Smith enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University in 2021 as a non-traditional student and soon became a familiar figure on campus after joining the Aggies’ golf program. His return to college and transition into student-athlete life were chronicled in the Amazon Prime documentary Redefined: J.R. Smith, produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter through their Uninterrupted media company.
Smith’s success extended beyond the golf course and into the classroom. Shortly after beginning his studies, he shared on social media that he earned a 4.0 GPA during his first semester. During a 2021 appearance on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt, Smith also reflected on the aspects of the HBCU experience that had resonated most with him during his time at North Carolina A&T.
“I’m able to reach out and really express myself in an intellectual way where people don’t look at me just as J.R. Smith the basketball player. When they see Earl J. Smith on that English paper…they don’t know who J.R. Smith is.”
Smith graduated this May from North Carolina A&T, concluding a prolific period in his life, but Jefferson is still going to poke fun at his golf skills, as brothers often do.
