LSU football was one of the most disappointing teams in college football last season, but now it’s a new era in Baton Rouge. Lane Kiffin has given this Tigers program a completely different feel and has brought back championship expectations to one of the most prestigious programs in the nation.
Of course, Kiffin won’t be able to win without an elite roster. He has recruited a great collection of talent out of the transfer portal, headlined by former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt. Leavitt is a dynamic playmaker who got some NFL buzz entering the 2025 season, but a foot injury derailed his season.
Now, Leavitt is getting healthy ahead of the summer and is ready to take command of Kiffin’s offense. On Wednesday, the former Ole Miss head coach gave an update on his new quarterback’s health, via On3 Sports.
“He’s doing well. He’s been out there at pretty much full strength now,” Kiffin said. “He’s got a really good arm. Really smart. He’s just in there grinding all the time on stuff. NFL mindset quarterback from a preparation standpoint. Now we’ve just got to put everything together in year one a little bit late, because now he’s finally cleared now with a lot of new pieces around him. It’s going to be a big summer and fall camp.”
Leavitt fits a similar mold to some of Kiffin’s recent quarterbacks, such as Jaxson Dart and Trinidad Chambliss, as a player who can hurt the defense with both his arm and his legs and is a bit chaotic at times. If Kiffin can bring the best out of the former Arizona State star, this Tigers offense will be incredibly hard to stop next season.
Leavitt also already has some College Football Playoff experience. He nearly pulled off a stunning upset of Texas in the Peach Bowl after the 2024 season with the Sun Devils before his squad fell short in overtime. Now, he seems to be healthy and will have even more talent around him in 2026 as he looks to compete for a title and cement his NFL Draft stock.
