Karl-Anthony Towns details talk with Dominican Republic president amid want to bring Knicks trophy to DR

Karl-Anthony Towns wants to bring the New York Knicks NBA championship trophy to the Dominican Republic.

While Towns is from Edison, New Jersey, he has roots in the Dominican Republic, as his late mom, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, was born and raised there. The Knicks star’s mom passed away in 2020.

The Knicks center wants to honor his mother and their Dominican heritage by bringing the Knicks trophy to the Dominican Republic after the team has not won a championship in 53 years. On the phone, Towns spoke to the Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader recently where he congratulated him on the historic win.

“I want to congratulate you for all your success, and really the Dominican Republic is very proud,” Abinader said in an Instagram Reel.

He also stated how proud the country and his mother are of his accomplishment.

“Your mother has to be very proud of you in Heaven, looking at you,” Abinader continued. “As well as all the country, all the Dominicans are very proud of you, of your success.”

Towns responded: “It’s awesome that our country is being shown to the world at the highest standard, and everyone is being able to see how amazing the Dominican Republic really is.”

The NBA star didn’t mention that he wants to bring the trophy to the DR but he made it known after the win that it is his intention to do so.

“Hell yeah, I’m bringing the trophy over there,” Towns said at the Game 5 press conference. “We’re taking it all over. Yessir, l’m gonna bring it to Santiago, Santo Domingo, Casa de Campo, La Romana … We’re gonna have a li’l world tour with it. But it’s great that Dominicans all around the world get to celebrate this moment.”

The Knicks were able to the end their 53-year drought after they defeated the San Antonio Spurs in five games during the NBA Finals. After the final buzzer, Towns made sure to thank his mother.

“Y’all heard my story, you know my story, and I just want to say: Thank you Momma, I appreciate you getting me one.”
