The New York Liberty are the hottest team right now after winning their eighth consecutive game on Wednesday, escaping the Chicago Sky, 96-95, courtesy of Sabrina Ionescu’s game-winner at Wintrust Arena.
Ionescu was reinserted into the contest and sank the left-handed layup with 10.3 seconds left. The Dream still had the chance to win, but Sydney Taylor’s jumper was off.
New York improved to 11-4, while Chicago, which suffered its fourth straight defeat, fell to 4-10. The Liberty have advanced to the championship game of the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup and are awaiting either the Minnesota Lynx or the Las Vegas Aces.
While Ionescu was the hero, multiple players stepped up for the Liberty. For Satou Sabally, that is what makes them very dangerous.
“This is exactly what makes us a basketball team. Everyone is important, and we’re just carrying each other. It doesn’t matter who starts or doesn’t start, we’re all just equal, and we’re all contributing to a win,” said Sabally, as quoted by Liberty reporter Myles Ehrlich.
Sabally, who signed with the Liberty in the offseason, scored 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting off the bench.
Having the three-time All-Star coming off the pine feels like an unfair luxury for New York. But it could have gone the other way. It is not easy for a player of Sabally’s caliber to accept the role, and yet, she and the Liberty have made it work.
Ionsecu finished with 10 points and three rebounds. Jonquel Jones had 19 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Breanna Stewart added 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
New York will face the Washington Mystics on Friday.
