Which teams will play in the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship game?

The WNBA has struck gold with the Commissioner’s Cup in recent years as their version of the In-Season Tournament. Now, after Wednesday night’s action, this year’s Commissioner’s Cup title game is officially set, and it is a renewal of one of the league’s most heated rivalries in recent years.

The New York Liberty and the Las Vegas Aces will square off for all the marbles on June 30, per ESPN’s Alexa Philippou. The Liberty will host the game at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn based on their point differential throughout the competition.

Both teams have won the Commissioner’s Cup before. The Aces won it back in 2022, while the Liberty beat the Aces in the title game in 2023. New York also lost a title game of its own, against the Minnesota Lynx in 2024.

The two teams will compete for a large share of a $500,000 prize pool, with each player from the winning team receiving $30,000 and each player from the losing team getting $10,000.

The Liberty rolled to the Eastern Conference spot in the title game with a 6-0 record in Commissioner’s Cup play. They secured their spot for good this week with a dominant win over the Washington Mystics on Sunday and a one-point road win over the Chicago Sky on Wednesday. Sabrina Ionescu hit a game-winner in the final 10 seconds on Wednesday, keeping New York unbeaten in Commissioner’s Cup play and getting them to 11-4 on the season.

The Western Conference race was closer, but the Aces took down the Phoenix Mercury to secure the Western Conference spot with a 6-1 record in Commissioner’s Cup action.

The Liberty and the Aces are very familiar with each other and have matched up a number of times in recent years. The Aces took down the Liberty in four games in the 2023 WNBA Finals, while the Liberty won the rematch in four games in the 2024 semifinals.

There will be no love lost between arguably the two best teams of the 2020s in this title game with the extra cash on the line, which should lead to another barnburner between a handful of the best players in the WNBA.
