The Atlanta Hawks will have the chance of drafting two players in the first round of the NBA Draft, with the first one coming with the No. 8 pick. Throughout the past few weeks, the rumors and mock drafts seem to think the Hawks will take one of the remaining guards with the pick, or they could select Aday Mara, addressing the center position.
For the first time, there is an idea that they could trade the pick. In Sam Vecenie’s latest mock draft, he has the Hawks selecting Kingston Flemings with the No. 8, but noted they’re open to a trade.
“The Hawks are open for business with this pick. Sources have said Atlanta is discussing both trade-up and trade-down scenarios. But it also could stay here and take the player it wants,” Vecenie wrote.
This means the Hawks really like somebody near the top of the draft, and they have the assets to move up. About a week ago, NBA insider Jake Fischer shared that the Hawks were open to trading the No. 23 pick in an attempt to make just one selection in the first round.
“The Hawks, as mentioned above, have a lottery turn at No. 8, but league sources say that Atlanta has informed rival teams that it will happily field offers for No. 23,” Fischer wrote. “The Hawks obtained a second pick in Round 1 via trade with Cleveland but are said to prefer making only one selection in the first round.”
If the Hawks decide to trade down from the No. 8 pick, there will be some teams open to listening, one of which is the Milwaukee Bucks, who reportedly plan to have multiple first-round picks in this draft. In ClutchPoints’ latest mock draft, Brett Siegel has the Hawks trading the No. 8 pick and Buddy Hield in a three-team deal with the Bucks and Oklahoma City Thunder.
No matter what happens, it seems like the Hawks could be anywhere on the draft board when it’s time to pick.
