While the Minnesota Twins are just 4.5 games back in the AL Central with their 35-40 record, the franchise is focused on their future. Which is why outfielder Byron Buxton has found himself in trade rumors once again.
But dealing Buxton is much easier said than done. Holding a full no-trade clause, Matthew Leach of MLB.com ultimately expects the Twins to hold onto the outfielder through the deadline. However, there is one scenario in which he could see Buxton getting traded.
“Now: Is there a scenario where he goes? Yes. But it starts with a bigger teardown, which right now doesn’t appear to be the direction they’re likely to go,” Leach said. “But if, say, the Twins part with Ryan Jeffers and Joe Ryan, then Buxton might well decide he doesn’t want to be the last one standing. But it’s hard to envision a sequence of events where he gets moved other than as part of a much bigger selloff.”
Minnesota has missed the playoffs the last two seasons. They already had a major fire sale at last year’s trade deadline, pointing to a full-on rebuild. However, the Twins have yet to completely blow it up. If that becomes the case, then Buxton may realistically look at the situation and waive his no-trade clause. But if the Twins continue to stay the course, holding onto veterans like Joe Ryan and Ryan Jeffers, a Buxton trade seems highly improbable.
Over his 63 games in 2026, the outfielder is hitting .275 with 23 home runs, 36 RBIs and seven stolen bases. He has become the catalyst of the offense and an overall leader on the Twins.
Buxton doesn’t want that to change anytime soon. Barring a complete shift in the franchise’s plan, the outfielder seems likely to get his wish at least up until the deadline.
