Red Sox rumors: Writer says Sonny Gray is more likely to be traded than Willson Contreras

With their season crumbling, the Boston Red Sox could be trading some players away to start over again. Recent news indicates that they may ship Sonny Gray rather than Willson Contreras, according to a Red Sox beat writer, according to Red Sox beat writer Ian Browne.

“I think Gray is more likely to go, despite the no-trade protection, because he will likely become a free agent at the end of the season. The one thing the Red Sox have going for them is starting pitching depth, both in the short and long term. What they don’t have is an abundance of right-handed power,” Browne stated on MLB.com

Browne noted that the Red Sox are lacking right-handed power in the lineup. Yet, their pitching has been mostly solid, despite the bad season. Although they are having a bad season, some believe the Red Sox might chase stars at the trade deadline.

Contreras is signed through next season and has been affordable at $17.5 million. So far, he is batting .299 with 13 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 29 runs. Contreras also has a .394 on-base percentage and a .540 slugging percentage.  Ultimately, he has been one of the bright spots on the team.

Sonny Gray has been excellent in the rotation, going 8-1 with a 3.03 ERA in 12 starts. Additionally, he is 6-0 with a 2.40 ERA since returning from a hamstring injury in May. That makes him a very valuable trade piece. Time will tell if Craig Breslow makes a move, especially as the Red Sox continue to tumble down in the standings.
