NHL rumors: Penguins’ Ryan Shea headed to open market after strong season

The Pittsburgh Penguins are coming off a run to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but lost in the first round. Now, as the team prepares for the offseason, the Penguins may have a new look to the team.

One of the players they will need to make a decision on is Ryan Shea, who is an unrestricted free agent. It seems that a decision on Shea’s side has been made, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

“Raddysh is the No. 1 defenseman on the UFA market, to be sure, but another name generating attention is Ryan Shea,” LeBrun wrote.  “Like Raddysh, there’s some late-bloomer action to the 29-year-old Shea, a fourth-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015. He plays up and down the D pairings and also plays both sides. Because of his age, the roster-in-transition Penguins can’t get into the kind of term he will command. Shea’s agent, Matt Keator, is obviously looking to get his client a healthy raise from the $900,000 he made this past season.”

Shea was the 121st overall selection of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015. He would go on to play at Northeastern for college before signing his entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars in 2020. He did not make it out of the AHL with the Stars and signed as a free agent with the Penguins ahead of the 2023-24 season, and made his NHL debut that year.

He is coming off his best season, playing 80 games with six goals and 29 assists. He made just $900 thousand this past year, but could get over $4 million on the open market this year.
