Lakers rumors: When Luka Doncic finally got healthy after missing playoffs

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a pivotal offseason with the NBA Draft and free agency rapidly approaching, and one of the most important developments involves the health of franchise star Luka Doncic.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Doncic has officially returned to full basketball activities after missing the entirety of the Lakers’ postseason because of a Grade 2 left hamstring strain suffered in early April.

McMenamin reported Thursday that Doncic was medically cleared on May 28, approximately two and a half weeks after Los Angeles’ playoff run ended.

“Doncic is spending the summer in Slovenia with his daughters, Gabriela and Olivia, but sources close to him told ESPN he is in ‘constant communication’ with Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick,” McMenamin wrote.

The report provided a significant update regarding Doncic’s recovery timeline.

“Coming off a season in which he led the league in scoring at 33.5 points per game and finished fourth in MVP voting before a Grade 2 left hamstring strain sidelined him for L.A.’s postseason run, Doncic is finally healthy as he begins his offseason training.”

McMenamin added that Doncic’s recovery has progressed to the point where there are no longer restrictions on his basketball activities.

“He was cleared for basketball activities on May 28 — about 2½ weeks after their series against the Thunder finished, sources close to Doncic told ESPN.”

One source described Doncic’s current status in simple terms.

“He’s in full go mode.”

The health update comes after a disappointing finish to an otherwise outstanding season for the Lakers star. Doncic was enjoying one of the best campaigns of his career before the injury derailed his postseason hopes.

In his first full season with Los Angeles following the blockbuster trade that brought him to the franchise in February 2025, Doncic averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, 7.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. He shot 47.6 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from 3-point range across 64 appearances while averaging 35.8 minutes per game.

His absence was felt throughout the playoffs as the Lakers struggled to overcome the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.

Now healthy, Doncic appears fully focused on preparing for the next stage of his Lakers tenure. According to McMenamin, he remains in regular contact with Pelinka and Redick as the organization navigates a critical summer.

The Lakers have repeatedly emphasized that the summer of 2026 would be a major opportunity to reshape the roster around Doncic. With the All-NBA guard now healthy and back on the court, Los Angeles can move forward with its offseason plans knowing its franchise cornerstone will be ready for training camp and the start of the 2026-27 season.
