What Phillies’ Andrew Painter said amid brutal struggles before demotion

The Philadelphia Phillies made a difficult decision on Wednesday. Starting pitcher Andrew Painter struggled once again in the Phillies’ 12-4 defeat against the Miami Marlins. After surrendering six runs in the outing, Painter saw his ERA increase to an alarming 7.06. The Phillies ultimately demoted Painter to Triple-A after the contest.

Painter revealed what he believes has been going wrong after the game, via Charlotte Varnes and Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

“The fastball’s just getting hit right now. So, I think we’ve just got to evaluate and just try to find out who I am as a pitcher right now,” Painter said.

The 23-year-old’s struggles on the mound have been undeniable in recent action. He has allowed at least five or more earned runs in each of his past three starts. The Phillies are attempting to improve their standings placement, and Painter simply has not been helping them win games.

Of course, the Phillies still believe in Painter. He was previously one of the top prospects in the entire sport. Perhaps this demotion will help Painter get back on track and end up turning things around.

Philadelphia is not going to give up on him anytime soon. Painter would not be the first top prospect to need a refresh at Triple-A before figuring things out.

The Phillies will closely monitor Andrew Painter’s performance at the Triple-A level moving forward. Meanwhile, the big league ball club will look to jump back into the win column on Thursday night against the New York Mets at 6:40 PM EST.
