NBA rumors: Warriors’ Trey Murphy III trade chatter picking up before draft

Rumors suggest the Golden State Warriors are looking to make a trade to add a star to the roster to team up with Stephen Curry. New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III has been linked to Golden State in the rumor mill for quite some time. Now it appears the buzz is growing louder just days before the 2026 NBA Draft.

The connection between the Warriors and the 25-year-old forward is not a new concept. Insider Brett Siegel reported that the front office inquired about Murphy’s availability at the 2026 trade deadline. The franchise reportedly offered Jonathan Kuminga, a first-round pick in 2026, and another future first-round pick.

“Along with (Jonathan) Kuminga, a young talent the Pelicans did hold a level of interest in, the Dubs were prepared to offer an unprotected first-round pick in 2026, along with some sort of softly protected pick in 2028 for Murphy, sources said,” claimed Siegel.

The Warriors ultimately pivoted and traded Kuminga, along with Buddy Hield, to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis, who is currently recovering from an Achilles injury. But the club’s interest in Murphy goes back years.

ESPN’s Anthony Slater mentioned on Wednesday that the Warriors have at least been interested in the five-year veteran for quite some time. The club has been interested in Murphy for years.

“New Orleans Pelicans wing Trey Murphy III could be more obtainable in this transaction cycle, league sources said. Murphy is a player the Warriors front office has circled for years as a prime wing who fits a need, the Kerr system, and, at 25, accomplishes the goal of getting younger,” stated Slater.

The Pelicans have reportedly been seeking at least a first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft in exchange for Trey Murphy III. New Orleans seemingly wants to get back into the first round this year after giving up its original first-round pick (No. 8 overall) to the Hawks after using it to move up in the 2025 draft to select Derik Queen.

NBA insider Jake Fischer suggested the Warriors’ No. 11 overall pick is one the Pelicans are seemingly intrigued with. Fischer claims the Pelicans are highly interested in former Tennessee Volunteers forward Nate Ament.

“The Pelicans are known to ‘want a lot’ for Murphy, as one interested team told The Stein Line last week, but they will at least listen. The Pelicans, furthermore, are also known to be very interested in acquiring a lottery pick for next week’s festivities,” reported Fischer.

“New Orleans, at present, only holds No. 58 at the end of next Wednesday’s second round. Sources say Ament is indeed very much one of the top prospects that would interest New Orleans if it could get high enough to draft him,” Fischer said.

The 2026 NBA Draft is set to begin at 8 p.m. EST on Tuesday, June 23. Both the Warriors and Pelicans are teams to watch to potentially make a trade or two. Especially once the first round of the draft is underway.
