With the fans of the New York Yankees wondering what the team will do when it comes to the upcoming MLB trade deadline, the ball club does have its eye on a specific player. There have been some who have connected the Yankees to Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman, as this MLB insider gives insight into the team’s interest.
Rutschman has been considered one of the more talented catchers in the league, as so far this season, for the 28-year-old in Baltimore, he has recorded a .259 batting average to go along with eight home runs and 40 RBIs in 53 games. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden would say that New York needs a “right-handed hitting catcher,” and while New York would “love” to trade for Rutschman, “a blockbuster like that is unlikely.”
“They also have been searching for a right-handed hitting catcher, with the Twins’ Ryan Jeffers being a name that’s been bandied about. They’d love to be able to find a way to trade for Adley Rutschman of the Orioles, but a blockbuster like that is unlikely. Other possibilities include Keibert Ruiz of the Nationals and Agustín Ramírez of the Marlins,” Bowden wrote.
The Yankees have other needs this season
Bowden would go into the other needs that the Yankees are looking to address ahead of the trade deadline, which are bullpen help and maybe even looking into adding another “right-handed power bat.”
“The Yankees bullpen has been great this year, but that’s an area they’re still going to try to improve on. One potential upgrade could come from their own farm system with Carlos Lagrange and his 100-mph fastball,” Bowden wrote. “The Yankees will also be monitoring infield prospect George Lombard Jr., who could be a left side of the infield upgrade in August and September. I’d like to see them get one more right-handed power bat, as well.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen if New York pursues Rutschman or anybody else as the team is 45-27, first in the AL East.
